THE REST OF MY RADIO SHOW COLLECTION
As many of you know, Phil was heavily involved with the Prince’s Trust foundation, and as such, he participated in their annual rock concerts with multiple other artists. Some of these shows were recorded and released on pre-FM vinyl and compact disc, however, these concerts did not coincide with a specific tour from Phil’s history. I have therefore added these shows to this page, with most occurring between 1986 and 1988. If you have any information regarding any other pre-FM charity shows, be they Prince’s Trust related or otherwise, please Contact Me.
Here is a complete listing of all known charity gig radio broadcast shows recorded during this period:
Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #SS86-C
The 1986 Prince’s Trust 10th Anniversary Radio Special:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Recorded live at Wembley Arena, London, England:
20 June 1986
Original Broadcast – Week of 13 September 1986
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
The Prince’s Trust is a charity organization formed by the Prince of Wales in 1976, and funds raised went to support at risk youth of England. The live concert events (which drew in multiple rock celebrities who gave of their time and energy for free) was only part of the charity work that the Trust generated.
One of the most reproduced Prince’s Trust shows was performed and recorded in June of 1986. It was the 10th Anniversary of the Trust, and there was even an official LP, CD and cassette released which contained portions of the show. You can view that official release HERE.
Westwood One put out several versions throughout the years under the Superstar Concert Series banner, including this one from September of that same year . Phil’s contribution was the song In The Air Tonight, performed alone at the piano. He also played drums in the Midge Ure All Star Band, which consisted of Eric Clapton and Elton John among others.
Incomplete capture. I don’t have this item in my personal collection, information obtained from a Discogs listing.
Complete track listing can be found here:

Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #SS87-5:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Recorded live at Wembley Arena, London, England:
20 June 1986
Original Broadcast – Week of 25 April 1987
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
Another version of the same show listed above, this time repackaged for broadcast in April of 1987.
Incomplete capture. From my personal collection. This exact show is not listed on Discogs.

Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #SS87-18:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Recorded live at Wembley Arena, London, England:
5 June 1987
Original Broadcast – Week of 7 August 1987
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
The Prince’s Trust concert was held again, almost one year later to the day, on 5 June 1987. And again, Westwood One captured portions of the performance for later broadcast. The show aired in August of 1987, again under the Superstar Concert Series banner. Phil’s contribution to that year’s show included a duet with Paul Young in which the two performed a Motown Medley containing bits from three Motown classics: Reach Out I’ll Be There, I Can’t Help Myself and It’s The Same Old Song. The two also performed the Righteous Brothers classic You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.
Incomplete capture. From my personal collection.
*NOTE: The Cue Sheet for this show lists the broadcast date as 7 August 1986 and the show number as SS 86-18. This must be a typo for two reasons: 1. The show was not recorded until June of 1987, and 2. The labels on the LPs indicate the show number as SS 87-18.

Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #SS C 88-B:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Recorded live at Wembley Arena, London, England:
5 June 1987
Original Broadcast –
Week of 9-10 April 1988
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
This is the exact same show as listed above under Superstar Concert Series Show #SS87-18, repackaged and slated for broadcast in April of 1988. Once again, Phil’s portion of that year’s show (which included the aforementioned duet with Paul Young) is presented.
Incomplete capture. I don’t have this item in my personal collection, information obtained from Discogs.

The 1988 Prince’s Trust Rock Gala Radio Special:
D.I.R. Broadcasting Networks Records
Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England:
5 June 1988
Original Broadcast – Week of 5 September 1988
pre-FM Quintuple Vinyl LP (Side J is BLANK)
This five LP set features the complete 1988 Prince’s Trust Rock Gala concert, which raised over £48 million for the charity.
As usual, the show had an all star line-up including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and many others. But it was Phil who did the lion’s share of work on this set.
The performers were backed by two all star bands, which played alternatively. The Midge Ure All Star Band, including Phil and Big Country’s Mark Brzezicki on drums, were featured as the backing band for Rick Astley, Black, Leonard Cohen, Howard Jones, Joe Cocker and Peter Gabriel. That means that Phil played drums on Gabriel’s Sledgehammer in addition to rockin’ the drums almost all night. (Midge Ure was also the Musical Director for the show, and as such, handled almost all of the artist introductions from the stage between acts.) The Eric Clapton All-Star Band, including Steve Ferrone and not Phil on drums, were featured as the backing band for Clapton himself, Mark Knopfler and Elton John. T’Pau and Wet Wet Wet both utilized their own band members for their songs. The final song features all of the artists on stage with Cocker singing lead.
This set features all of the songs played that night, along with segment intros and breaks by show host Doug Podell and original commercial blocks. Phil contributed the songs Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore?, You Can’t Hurry Love and I Missed Again.
As stated previously, this show is actually a complete capture. From my personal collection.

The King Biscuit Flower Hour 1988 Prince’s Trust Rock Concert Parts I & II:
D.I.R. Broadcasting Networks Records
Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England:
5 June 1988
Original Broadcast – Week of 29 January 1989
pre-FM Single Compact Disc
Our friends at the King Biscuit Flower Hour reproduced the 1988 Prince’s Trust show and repackaged it onto compact disc on at least one occasion (and possibly two – more on that in a moment) for broadcast across two weekends in 1989. Their show was significantly edited down to fit onto two discs. Phil’s solo performances, including two of the three songs listed above, namely You Can’t Hurry Love and I Missed Again, appear on Part I, while the track Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore? shows up on Part II. Discogs only lists Part I of II, but information from an eBay listing does show that the broadcast contained two discs. (Oddly, the eBay listing shows an image of the cue sheet for Part II with a date of 20 – 26 March 1989. This would lead me to believe that the show was broadcast at least twice in 1989; once at the end of January into early February, and again in mid-to-late March.)
I don’t have the CD version of this show in my personal collection; information obtained via Discogs and eBay.
Complete track listing for Part I can be found here:
Live Cuts 1990:
D.I.R. Broadcasting Networks Records
Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England:
5 June 1988
Original Broadcast – Week of 29 January 1990
pre-FM Single Compact Disc
Here’s another one-off show from the Live Cuts (Tracks / Trax) series of shows mentioned earlier. This disc contains a single track from Phil’s contribution to the 1988 Prince’s Trust Rock Gala concert. Even though this entry is produced on compact disc (as opposed to the other entries in this series which were produced on vinyl) this show still only has six live concert performances, one from each artist. The artists are Eric Clapton, Eddie Money, The Hoooters, The J. Geils Band, Jethro Tull and Phil. Phil’s lone track is You Can’t Hurry Love, and the included Cue Sheet indicates it was recorded at this concert. I do not have this item in my personal collection; information obtained via Discogs.
